Sometimes, all it takes is the right palette to completely transform a piece, and this soft blue blend, using Alchemy chalk-style paint in Sage, Thyme, and Storm, is a perfect example. Cool, calm, and subtly layered, this blue blend furniture makeover brings serene style to any space. Blue never goes out of style; it’s timeless, versatile, and always in demand.
DIY Furniture Paint Blend in Serene Alchemy Shades
This project was simple to achieve and incredibly soothing to work on. If you’re looking to experiment with blending, this blue-toned palette is a great place to start. The technique is forgiving, intuitive, and lets you create soft transitions without stress. You absolutely can do this, and you might even find it relaxing!
Why Sage, Thyme & Storm Work Beautifully Together
This colour story is a quiet showstopper. Sage is a calm and muted green that offers the perfect base. Thyme introduces earthy depth, and Storm brings in a hint of dusky coolness to ground the entire look. Together, they flow naturally, like mist rolling over a field at dawn.
If you’re updating an old piece or simply want to try something new, this combination creates an elegant, nature-inspired statement.
What We Used:
What Is Colour Blocking and Why Does It Help?
Before blending, we like to start with a technique called colour blocking. This means painting each area of the piece in its intended colour first, Sage, Thyme, and Storm in this case. So you can map out your palette and ensure you’ve got even coverage. It acts as a visual guide, making blending easier and more precise.

How to Blend Alchemy Chalk-Style Paint for a Seamless Finish
We started by giving the piece a quick clean with Fusion’s TSP Alternative. Since we were repainting an old Fusion-painted piece, only minimal dust needed removing, easy prep is always a bonus!
Our base was one coat of Sage. This calm green laid the perfect foundation, and because we knew we’d be layering more colour on top, we didn’t need a second coat.
After letting the base dry completely for a full day, we moved on to mapping out the blend. Using Thyme, we began layering around the borders and key sections of the furniture, using the natural lines of the piece to guide our brushwork. A few light mists of water helped soften the transitions.
We continued with a dappling technique, gently brushing and feathering the edges, before introducing Storm at the outer edges. With three brushes in hand (one per colour), we alternated dabs, misting, and blending until each colour melted into the next.

The result? A delicate gradient that flows from Sage to Storm blue. You can’t get this wrong. When it looks good to you, it’s done!

Why Alchemy Chalk-Style Paint Is Ideal for Blending Techniques

Alchemy’s velvety lime and chalk finish lends itself beautifully to blends. This paint was made to be layered, played with, and blended. It’s not about perfection. It’s about trusting your eye and having fun with the process.
Unlike a more refined Fusion™ Mineral Paint finish, Alchemy encourages free-flow creativity. And the results speak for themselves: rich in texture, natural in tone, and totally unique.

Blending Furniture with Chalk-Style Paint: FAQs
Do I need to be artistic to try this?
Not at all! Alchemy was created to help everyone tap into their creativity. If it looks good to you, you’ve done it right. There’s no wrong way, just play and enjoy the process.
How long should I let my base dry before blending?
At least a full day. Letting the paint begin curing will prevent the water mister from reactivating and pulling the base colour during blending.
What kind of brush should I use for blending?
Any brush will work, but we recommend the Alchemy Brush. It makes feathering edges and layering easier and more fluid.
How much paint did this project use?
We didn’t even use half of a 120ml pot of each colour. Alchemy goes a long way, so it’s a budget-friendly way to transform a piece with impact.
What makes Alchemy different from Fusion Mineral Paint?
Alchemy is made with a Limestone and chalk base and was designed for artistic, expressive finishes. It has a velvety matte texture and is perfect for blending, layering, and experimenting. Fusion™ Mineral Paint offers a smooth, built-in topcoat finish, ideal for clean, professional looks, whereas Alchemy encourages freedom and play.
