However, when that sofa is starting to show its age or just doesn’t mesh with the updated decor, it may seem like it’s time to drop a significant amount of money on a new one. Prepping your leather sofa for Fusion™ Mineral Paint
We had this black leather sofa for many years and were ready to give it a new makeover in a totally new colour. Before going ahead with the painting, we had to address some issues like the sagging back cushions. Did you know that even though you may have attached cushions on the back of your sofa, most, if not all sofas, will have a hidden zipper under and back of the back cushions?
To re-shape the back cushions, we added some extra polyfill stuffing cut to the size of the cushion to plump up the backs. We purchased the stuffing in a roll. If you find inserting the stuffing difficult, try pushing up the stuffing with a yardstick.
To gain easier access, we removed the lining under the sofa. This made it much easier to remove the long screws that held the 3 seat cushions. This will make painting so much easier.
Once we fixed the sagging cushion issue, we cleaned the sofa well to ensure there was no sticky or greasy residue. We washed the sofa with Fusion TSP Alternative diluted in water.
Painting Leather with Wood Wick Fusion™ Mineral Paint
Our sofa was now prepped for painting. We applied two coats of Fusion Wood Wick. Two coats were enough to cover the original black. We alternated using Staalmeester Round and Flat Brushes to apply the paint.
Top Tip: When thinking about painting leather or vinyl, updating a tired old leather armchair or even your old winter boots is a fun makeover! It’s good to note that sometimes the paint may have an odd reaction with certain vinyl products, and afterwards, the surface can feel sticky/tacky. If this happens, you can apply Tough Coat over the top, and it should resolve the issue. For more information on painting leather, check out our blog post here.
Waxing Painted Leather
After the paint dried, we waxed the sofa with a light coat of Fusion Clear Wax, with Lavender Scent. We worked in sections, applied the wax with a Staalmeester waxing brush and then gently removed any excess wax with a lint-free rag. This step isn’t necessary but can help the leather to feel supple and soft.

Once all the seat cushions were put back in place, we were amazed at what a great transformation. It looked like a brand new sofa and the extra step to add extra polyfill stuffing made such a big difference.
The leather still feels soft and buttery, and because Fusion™ Mineral Paint is s self sealing paint it will NOT transfer onto your clothes.
