How to Blend Alchemy Chalk-Style Paint for a Stunning Furniture Makeover
This hall table was in rough shape when we found it on the roadside, so we gave it a thorough double clean using Fusion’s TSP Alternative before it was ready for its close-up.

\We started with colour-blocking the top, middle, and legs with their respective shades. Raspberry at the top, then Sunset, and finally finishing with the sunny brightness of Marigold. This extra step made the blending process even easier and more seamless. Since Alchemy paint dries quickly, this part didn’t take long at all.

Blending Chalk-Style Paint: Why Colour Blocking Makes It Easier
Blending is what sets Alchemy chalk-style paint apart. It’s expressive, artistic, and creates that beautifully soft transition from one colour to the next. But before you get brush happy, a bit of planning makes all the difference. That’s where colour blocking comes in.

Colour blocking is the process of painting each section of your piece in its intended colour before you start blending. Think of it like sketching out your design. It gives you clean pigment placement, enhances coverage, and makes the blending process much smoother. In this project, we blocked out Raspberry, Sunset, and Marigold in distinct zones before gently feathering one shade into the next.

With Alchemy’s velvety matte finish and blend-friendly formula, softening those lines becomes second nature. A mist of water and a light touch with your brush is all it takes to melt colours together and create a gradient that feels cohesive and completely custom.
How to Blend Alchemy Limestone and Chalk Style Paint
This is the part you’ve probably been waiting for, and yes, it’s as easy and fun as it looks! Once your base coats are dry, blending is all about letting go and playing with the paint. We used a light mist of water between the colour transitions. We blended one wet edge of a colour into the wet edge of the colour above, brushing a couple of inches into the next colour until they melded together into a seamless gradient, almost creating a new hue where they met. Once the blend looked visually harmonious, we knew it was perfect. There’s no wrong way to blend; if your eye is pleased, you’ve done it right.

What makes Alchemy Lime and chalk-style paint special is that it invites you to be expressive. This isn’t about a flawless, factory finish like you might aim for with Fusion™ Mineral Paint. Alchemy is about discovery. It’s loose, free, and soulful. It was created to help you explore your creative side, even if you don’t consider yourself an artist. Just give yourself permission to try, and you’ll be surprised by how satisfying the process is.
Why Alchemy Is Perfect for Blended Finishes

This project isn’t just eye-catching; it’s a great reminder that Alchemy paints are made for creative expression. The velvety matte finish gives a soft, chalky texture that embraces blends beautifully. With just a few tools and a trio of vibrant colours, you can completely transform a tired old piece into a showstopper. Check out another Alchemy Ombre Project here!

Blending Furniture with Chalk-Style Paint: FAQs
What is colour blocking, and why should I do it before blending?
Colour blocking means painting each area of your furniture in its intended colour before you start blending. It helps with even coverage, keeps colours vibrant, and gives you a clear structure to work from. It’s especially helpful when using highly pigmented paints like Alchemy and makes blending between shades smoother and more controlled.
Why is Alchemy chalk-style paint so good for blending?
Alchemy is formulated with acrylic, limestone and chalk, giving it a velvety matte texture and great workability. It responds well to layering, water misting and feathering, which are all key techniques for creating soft transitions between colours. Unlike paints with built in topcoats, Alchemy stays open longer so you can take your time with blending.
What’s the easiest way to blend colours with chalk-style paint?
Apply each colour in sections, give them a couple of coats, then, while still slightly wet, mist with water and gently feather one colour into the next using a soft brush. Blend about two inches into the adjacent colour until the transition looks seamless. link ombre project here.
Do I need to be artistic to try a blended furniture makeover?
Not at all! Alchemy was created to help everyone tap into their creativity. If it looks good to you, you’ve done it right. There’s no wrong way, just play and enjoy the process.
What kind of brush should I use for blending?
You can use any brush, but we love the soft bristles of the Alchemy Brush for blending. They help feather the edges and create that smooth, dreamy transition with minimal effort.
How much paint did this project use?
We didn’t even use half of a 120ml pot of each colour. Alchemy goes a long way, so it’s a budget-friendly way to transform a piece with impact.
What other colour combinations work well for blending?
We’ve created several beautiful Alchemy blends using different colour pairings. From cool coastal tones to earthy layered neutrals, the possibilities are endless. Check out our other blog posts and videos for inspiring colour combos and tutorials to guide you through.
What makes Alchemy different from Fusion Mineral Paint?
Alchemy is made with Acrylic, Limestone and Chalk. It was designed for artistic, expressive finishes. It features a velvety matte texture, making it perfect for blending, layering, and experimentation. Fusion™ Mineral Paint offers a smooth, built-in topcoat finish, ideal for clean, professional looks, whereas Alchemy encourages freedom and play.
