Pottery Barn Dupe with Stain and Finishing Oil
Creating a budget-friendly Pottery Barn-inspired dresser is more accessible than you might imagine. Many of us appreciate the allure of pale to medium-toned ‘natural’ wood finishes, reminiscent of iconic Pottery Barn collections like The Livingston, The Toscana, and The Sausalito. The great news is that with a second-hand IKEA dresser as your starting point and a few basic tools, achieving a comparably stunning outcome is well within reach. Create a Pottery Barn Dupe with Stain and Finishing Oil: Faux Wood the Easy Way!
By incorporating Fusion™ Mineral Paint into the process, you elevate your project to another level, ensuring that your IKEA dresser not only looks like a Pottery Barn masterpiece but also reflects a high-end finish. This easy-to-follow 5-step guide will lead you through the entire process, from initial cleaning to the addition of intricate details, transforming your IKEA dresser into a Pottery Barn replica. Not only will your finished piece exude a high-end aesthetic, but it will also translate into substantial savings.
Tools and Materials
Before diving into the transformation process, gather the following tools and materials:
- Fusion’s TSP Alternative
- Medium grit sanding block
- Raw Silk Fusion Mineral Paint
- Cappuccino SFO (Stain and Finishing Oil)
- Two workshop chip brushes
- 1 Staalmeester ONE series Spalter wide brush
- Basic molding trim (optional for added detailing)
- Strong adhesive
- Nail gun (optional)
Step 1: Clean the Dresser
Thoroughly clean the second-hand dresser with Fusion’s TSP Alternative to eliminate oil, grease, and dirt buildup. This ensures a clean surface ready for painting with Fusion™ Mineral Paint.
Step 2: Prep and Paint
Use a medium grit sanding pad to scuff up the dresser’s exterior, this does 2 things, 1, de-glosses the surface creating a matte substrate and also provides ‘tooth’ to maximize adhesion. Apply two coats of Raw Silk paint to achieve the perfect base colour for the faux wood look.
Step 3: Applying the SFO Glaze
Allow the paint to dry for at least 2 days before applying Cappuccino SFO as a ‘glaze’. Use a chip brush to apply the stain in the direction of real wood grain, removing excess until the desired look is achieved.
Tip: SFO has a long open time, making it beginner-friendly. Experiment until you achieve your desired appearance.

Step 4: Trim and Detailing
For this look, we wanted to add some detail and decided on trim. Measure and cut trim pieces for the drawer fronts. Paint and stain the trim before applying it to the drawers. Let the dresser and trim pieces dry for about a week to allow the SFO ‘glaze’ to cure.
Step 5: Assembly
Once everything is dry, apply the trim to the drawer fronts using a strong adhesive from the hardware store. While a nail gun adds extra hold, it’s not necessary for low-impact drawer fronts.
