Materials Used for the Newell Buffet Makeover

Preparing the Buffet for Fusion Ultra Grip

To ensure a smooth and long-lasting finish, it’s essential to properly clean and prepare the surface before painting. That’s why we always start by giving the buffet a thorough cleaning using Fusion TSP Alternative. Diluted with 1-2 capfuls in a bowl of water, this powerful cleaner removes any dirt and grease that may not be visible to the eye, making it an essential step in the painting process.

Next, we removed the old hardware and filled the original holes with wood filler to be able to add our new Champagne Gold pulls and knobs.

This buffet had a very shiny original finish. So, to get the best adherence, we rolled on an even coat of Fusion Ultra Grip before applying the paint. 

We let the Ultra Grip dry overnight.

Tips and Tricks for Painting with a Combination of Brushes and Rollers

When painting this buffet, we found that using a combination of rolling the paint on and then using a brush to even out the paint right after, produced a clean and professional look. This is known as the ‘laying-off method’.

To ensure a smooth continuous stroke from one end to the other, we sprayed a light mist of water with our Fusion Mister on the top of the buffet to increase open time slightly before drying. Alternatively, you could use Extender for this step. For the top of the buffet and the rounded columns we used a Staalmeester round brush, while for the moulded edges, the bended brush was the perfect size to reach deep into the edge. We applied two coats of our newly released 2023 Fusion Mineral Paint colour, Newell.

To achieve a polished and refined appearance, we coated both the inside and outside of the buffet with the new colour Newell.

Once the paint dried, we sealed the buffet with Fusion Matte Tough Coat. There are a few ways to apply our wipe-on topcoat but we recommend using our applicators. Dampen the sponge slightly, pour off some of the Tough Coat and dip the sponge into the topcoat. Wipe off the excess and apply in long continuous strokes.

Champagne Gold Hinges & Hardware

We drilled new holes and added our new Gold Champagne hardware. Once the new hardware was added, the old hinges did not match our new knobs and pulls. To fix this problem, we painted the old hinges with Fusion Metallic “Champagne Gold” with a thin artist brush. It really popped against this beautiful colour.

A Fresh Look for an Old Buffet using Newell

When it came to styling the Newell Buffet, we opted for an Old World feel by creating a gallery wall above it. We selected a variety of frames in different sizes and finishes to add visual interest. To create a cohesive look, we vintage art and prints. By mixing and matching frames and art, we were able to create a charming and eclectic display that complements the sage green hue of the buffet. We also added some decorative elements to the buffet, to enhance the Old World ambience. With these touches, the Newell Buffet not only has a new look but also a personality all its own.
