Rose Water Antique Vanity. We wanted to give this dark wood antique vanity a soft and romantic feel. You can find these antique vanities readily at almost any flea market or antiques show room. It’s a great way to add a unique look and style to your home. Follow along with the step by steps for a pink dressing table makeover.
MATERIALS USED:
- TSP Alternative cleaner
- Bin Shellac Sealer
- Fusion Mineral Paint Rose Water
- Staalmeester Flat brush
- Escutcheon from Lee Valley Hardware
PREPARING AN ANTIQUE DRESSER FOR PAINT
This makeover is very easy- with a simple clean, a blocking primer for the bleeding of the wood, then a simple coat of paint and a wax top coat to help prevent water marks make this a quick afternoon makeover.
First step is always cleaning. Clean with TSP Alternative to remove the built up dirt and grease that accumulates over time.
This piece was bleeding while cleaning, lots of tannins were showing through so we decided to block the tannins with a Shellac based sealer so the entire piece wouldn’t bleed. This is common with cherry, mahogany, or pine knots that show through! This is the only way to stop bleed through.
PAINTING AN ANTIQUE DRESSER
When the primer was dry we applied 2 coats or Rose Water, allowing 30 minutes between coats. Using the Staalmeester flat brush helps get a smooth finish.
As is common with antiques the escutcheon were missing. We replaced them with new ones, which we ordered through Lee Valley Hardware.
FINISHING AN ANTIQUE DRESSER
Since a vanity is susceptible to spills, from make-up pigments and creams, we sealed the paint with Fusion Clear Wax, alternatively you can opt with something more durable like Tough Coat matte or Glossy. Fusion doesn’t need a topcoat but for high traffic areas like a dressing table top it is recommended.
PINK DRESSING TABLE
This light and airy blush pink is sophisticated and would work well in many spaces. We think it works particularly well on this antique dressing table.
