Painting your kitchen can completely transform the heart of your home, offering a cost-effective and impactful way to update the space without a full renovation. From cabinets to islands and built-in features, you can Transform Your Kitchen with Paint so that it feels fresh, cohesive, and entirely yours.

When designing my own kitchen, I wanted a bold yet timeless look, so I chose Everett—a stunning, aged and weathered olive green with subtle bronze undertones. This complicated colour is earthy, tranquil, and grounding, making it the perfect choice for creating a kitchen that feels elegant yet inviting. To balance the statement-making cabinets, I kept the rest of the space neutral and light, creating a harmonious and sophisticated atmosphere.
Why I Chose Everett
Everett isn’t just a colour; it’s a statement. Its aged, weathered olive tones with hints of bronze create a richness and depth that elevate any kitchen design. This earthy shade feels both grounded and tranquil, making it a timeless choice that pairs beautifully with natural materials and textures.

In my kitchen, the boldness of Everett shines thanks to the ample natural light, which softens its depth while allowing its subtle complexity to come through. Its tranquil nature is the perfect complement to the white oak flooring, neutral walls, and minimalist design elements.
The neutral walls are painted in Homestead House Interior Wall Paint, Raw Silk, Dead Flat Finish!

How I Designed the Space
I chose a thoughtful approach to the layout to let Everett take centre stage without overwhelming the room.
I chose not to include upper cabinets throughout the entire kitchen, as they can feel overwhelming, especially with a bolder colour like Everett. This decision created a more open and balanced look, allowing the bold lower cabinets and island to shine. To maintain a seamless flow, I opted for built-in cabinetry and panel-ready appliances, with the painted cabinets extending right over them. This approach hides the appliances and eliminates visual clutter, resulting in a cohesive and streamlined design. Above the stove, I added floating shelves instead of traditional upper cabinets, further enhancing the airy and modern feel of the space.

Open Shelving with Built-in Lighting: On either side of the sink, I installed open shelving with integrated lighting. This design creates a sense of openness and adds a soft, ambient glow in the evenings.
Lighting and Ambiance: To complement the boldness of Everett, I integrated lighting into the open shelving. The built-in lights provide both functionality and ambiance, creating a warm glow that softens the room and highlights decor items. Open shelving also allows the space to feel more airy and modern, balancing the richness of the painted cabinets.

Contrasting Elements: The dark lowers and island contrast beautifully against the white oak floors, neutral walls, and a white oak dining table, creating balance and sophistication.
Seated Built-In Bench: The bench, also painted in Everett, ties the entire kitchen design together while adding a functional and stylish seating area.

How to Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets Like a Pro
- Prep is Key – You can learn all about prep for your kitchens in this blog.
Start by cleaning the cabinets thoroughly with TSP Alternative to remove grease and grime. If glossy, lightly sand the surfaces for better adhesion, and wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Read more on surface prep here. - Remove Hardware and Doors
Take off cabinet doors, hinges, and handles to make painting easier and ensure a smooth finish. Label each door so you can reinstall them correctly later. Laying them flat for painting is always a good idea! - Priming is not necessary.
Fusion Mineral Paint has incredible adhesion, but if you’re working with a challenging surface like melamine or thermofoil , consider a primer like Fusion Ultra Grip. If you have wood knots or Cherry Wood or Mahogany then you can use a BIN primer to block tannins from coming through. - Paint with Precision.
Use a high-quality brush like the Staalmeester One Series for detailed work, and a Staalmeester roller for larger, flat areas. Apply thin, even coats and allow 2 hours of drying time between layers. - Seal for Extra Durability
While Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat, kitchens are a well-loved space. Consider adding Ultra Guard Satin for extra protection, especially due to water and kitchen oils.
