Creating a kid’s bedroom is so much fun because it’s one of the few spaces where you can really let your creativity run wild. Kids love colour, patterns, striped walls, and themes that reflect their personalities and interests, so designing a room with them is a wonderful opportunity to bond and make the space feel uniquely theirs. Here are some ideas and tips for decorating and painting kids’ rooms, including how to create a fun and functional space with DIY Striped Walls.

Get Kids Involved in the Process
• Let Them Choose Colors: Have them pick their favourite colours from a fan deck or colour card. This makes them feel included and ensures they’ll love their room.
• Small Decisions, Big Impact: Let them help with smaller tasks like taping walls or painting a tester board. They’ll feel proud to have contributed to their special space.
Feature Walls
Feature walls are a fantastic way to add personality without overwhelming the room. Here’s what works well:
1. Striped Feature Walls:
In this room, we embraced a bold, rainbow-striped wall using Fusion Mineral Paint colours: Liberty Blue, Fort York Red, Tuscan Orange, Prairie Sunset, and Park Bench.
Stripes are an inexpensive and flexible design that can evolve as the child grows—simply paint over them when it’s time for a change.
2. Wall Murals:
Create whimsical designs like clouds, mountains, or abstract patterns. These can be done with stencils or freehand, depending on your skill level.
3. Geometric Shapes:
Use painter’s tape to create triangles, hexagons, or diagonal lines. This is an easy way to add a modern twist with minimal effort.
The main walls are painted in Homestead House Interior Wall Paint, Raw Silk, Dead Flat Finish! This beautiful white allows your feature colours to really pop.
DIY Striped Wall How-To
Materials
- Frog Tape 2”
- Laser Level
- Tape Measure
- Step Stool
- Paint Brushes
- Fusion Mineral Paint (Liberty Blue, Fort York Red, Tuscan Orange, Prairie Sunset, and Park Bench)
Steps to DIY Striped Walls
1. Measure & Mark: Measure the length of the wall, find the center, and mark 2” on each side.
2. Laser Level: Use the laser level to guide your painter’s tape for perfectly straight lines. Continue taping until you have enough stripes for the desired number of colours.

3. Remove Alternate Stripes: Peel off every other tape section to create areas to paint.
4. Paint: Apply two coats of your selected colours.

5. Remove Tape While Wet: This prevents the paint from pulling or cracking along the edges.

Neutral Bases & Fun Accents
- Keep the majority of the room neutral (walls, furniture, and bedding) to allow the colourful accents to pop.
- A treehouse-style bunk bed adds a playful element to the room while keeping the main focus on functionality. Pair it with faux plants, like fig trees, to add life and texture to the room without the upkeep.
Functional Spaces for Play & Creativity
- A Writing Nook: Add a small desk under the feature wall to create a creative space.
- Storage Solutions: Incorporate cubbies, baskets, or a toy chest painted in a complementary colour to keep the room tidy and organized.
- Reading Corner: A small rug, beanbag chair, or floor cushions can create a cozy area for reading.
Creative Painting Ideas for Kids’ Rooms
1. Chalkboard Paint: Use it on a section of the wall for a fun, erasable canvas.
2. Ceiling Art: Paint the ceiling in a light pastel or soft pattern to create a magical feel when they look up.
3. Furniture Makeovers: Paint dressers or bookshelves in bright or complementary colours for added personality.
Why Paint & DIY Striped Walls is Perfect for Kids’ Rooms
