Summer-Inspired Boho drinks cabinet another Ikea Hack! Let us show you how we took this cheap-looking MDF Ikea cabinet and brought it back to life with bright orange paint, some raised-stencilling and a little gold wax. The finished look is a bohemian and unique! Here is the step-by-step.
Supplies:
- Aperol Spritz Milk Paint by Fusion
- Fusion Hemp Oil
- Fusion Embossing Pearl Paste
- Fusion Pale Gold Metallic Paint
- Whisk
- Cup/Bowl for mixing
- Spatula
- 200 grit Sandpaper
- Staalmeester Flat Brush
- Staalmeester Pointed Sash Brush
Since the cabinet is raw MDF board, no sanding or other prep was needed. We mixed equal parts Aperol Spritz Fusion Milk Paint and water, and then adjusted the consistency slightly to make it a bit thicker. We let the mixed paint stand 15 minutes to make sure the powder dissolves properly.
Here’s a quick tutorial on how to mix Milk Paint
Ikea Cabinet Hack
We choose one of the newest colours in Milk Paint by Fusions line Aperol Spritz, a beautiful bold bright orange.
We applied two coats of Aperol Spritz all over with our Fusion flat brush. When the paint dried we gave the cabinet an all over sanding with a 200 grit sandpaper to smooth out any bumps.
This step is not necessary but can help you achieve that flawlessly smooth finish with Milk Paint. Milk Paint is a natural paint made with mixing powder. If the powder is not completely dissolved you can get tiny little clumps of unmixed pigment. A light sanding smooths this out perfectly.
Applying Smooth Embossing Paste
We wanted to add a little design to our otherwise flat cabinet using a raised stencil technique. To achieve this we stencilled Fusion Embossing Pearl Paste onto our stencil and spread the embossing paste evenly over the stencil with a scraper. We added 3 mandala patterns to our cabinet, washing the stencil after each application. We let the embossing paste dry for 12 hours.

After the embossing paste hardened, we painted the raised detail with our Aperol Spritz colour using the Staalmeester pointed sash brush. Once the paint dried, we sealed the cabinet with Fusion Hemp Oil. We let the hemp oil dry overnight and then to highlight the raised detail we went over the edges with a small angled artist’s brush and some Fusion Pale Gold Metallic Paint dry brushed on. This part could be done before the Hemp Oil.
The end result figuratively had our jaws on the floor!
The final look is just stunning and this perfectly summer-Inspired Boho cocktail drinks cabinet would look good in almost any space.
