In our latest project, we took on the challenge of rescuing a beautiful vintage bentwood rocking chair from the brink of the landfill. This piece, with its classic curves and timeless design, deserved a second chance, and we were excited to breathe new life into it with a simple yet elegant upcycling vintage furniture makeover. Tools and Materials Needed
Before diving into the transformation process, we gathered the necessary tools and materials:
- TSP Alternative (for cleaning)
- Medium Grit Sanding Block (to prepare the surface)
- Colour: Raw Silk (for the chair’s body)
- Colour: Cathedral Taupe (for the cane webbing)
- Staalmeester Brushes (for painting)
- Staple Gun
- New Fabric & Foam for Cushion
Removing the Seat and Old Upholstery
We started by carefully removing the seat from the chair using a power drill. Once the seat was detached, we used a hammer to strip away the old fabric and foam. The cushion had seen better days, and it was time for an upgrade—part of our DIY chair makeover process.
Choosing New Materials
With the seat stripped down, we headed to Fabricland to pick out some fresh, modern fabric for the cushion. We also purchased new foam padding to ensure the chair would be as comfortable as it was stylish. This step is crucial in how to reupholster a chair cushion effectively.

Back at the workshop, we traced the seat onto the new foam and cut it to size. Reupholstering was a straightforward process: we placed the fabric over the foam, ensuring even tension on all sides, and secured it to the seat base with a staple gun. Next, we cleaned the chair thoroughly using a TSP alternative to remove any dirt and grime.
After cleaning the chair, we lightly scuffed the entire surface with a medium grit sanding block. This step is crucial for ensuring that the painting vintage furniture adheres properly, especially on older furniture with a high gloss finish.

For the body of the chair, we chose Raw Silk—a soft, neutral color that complements the chair’s vintage charm. We applied three thin coats, allowing each to dry thoroughly for a smooth, even finish.
The cane webbing portion was painted in Cathedral Taupe, a slightly darker shade that adds depth and contrast to the piece. Since the webbing didn’t require as much coverage, one coat was sufficient. This combination created a perfect example of sustainable home decor.
