Materials & Prep!
- Homestead House Rideau Blue
- TSP Alternative
- Sand Paper
- Wiping Cloth
- Hemp Oil
- Stain & Finishing Oil “Cappuccino”
Before embarking on any refinishing project, proper preparation is key. Start by clearing the surface of your bedside table and removing any hardware. Next, give the entire piece a thorough cleaning using TSP Alternative. This ensures the surface is free from dirt, dust, and any residues that could interfere with the paint’s adhesion.
Next, give your piece a good scuff sand. Sanding helps to achieve a smooth and even finish. Using medium-grit sandpaper (around 120-grit), gently sand the entire surface of the bedside table. This step helps to remove any existing finish, imperfections, or rough spots. Once you’ve sanded the entire piece, switch to finer-grit sandpaper (around 220-grit) and give it a final pass to create a beautifully smooth surface.
Painting the Bedside Table in Rideau Blue
Now comes the exciting part—applying the Homestead House Rideau Blue paint. This particular shade is a captivating mix of blue and gray tones, offering a touch of elegance and versatility. Stir the paint thoroughly before application to ensure an even distribution of colour. You can use a brush, foam roller, or paint sprayer based on your preference. Begin painting the bedside table, starting with the top and working your way down to the sides and legs. Apply thin, even coats and allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
Distressing for a Vintage Look
For those who desire a vintage or rustic look, distressing the bedside table can add character and depth to the final piece. Once the paint has dried completely, use sandpaper or a sanding block to gently distress the edges, corners, and areas that would naturally wear over time. Experiment with the amount of distressing until you achieve the desired effect, keeping in mind that less is often more.
Protective Finish
To safeguard your hard work and ensure the longevity of your refinished bedside table, apply a protective finish. We chose Hemp Oil as our topcoat over top of Rideau Blue which adds a protective layer and brings out the true colour of the Milk Paint. We used Stain and Finishing Oil in Cappuccino for the natural wood top. If you’re looking for added durability, applying a coat of Stain and Finishing Oil will increase sheen and durability!
