In thrift stores across the country, you can often find old, tired dressers just waiting for a new lease on life—and they are usually quite affordable. This particular dresser had the perfect dimensions for our space but desperately needed a refresh. Despite its solid structure, it had a nearly Ikea-style plastic surface, which might deter some. However, this is no obstacle when you have Fusion™ Mineral Paint at hand, ready to transform any piece into a Pretty in Pink Damask Dresser, a stunning addition to your home.
Take a look at the dresser before:
Tools and Materials List:
- Fusion™ TSP Alternative in a Misting Bottle & Rag
- Fusion™ Ultra Grip
- Tough Coat Sponge for applying Ultra Grip
- Staalmeester Roller for a smooth paint application
- Fusion™ Mineral Paint in the shade Damask
- New hardware (handles)
- Decorative trimming edge (purchased from a local hardware store)
- Wood glue
- Nails and wood filler
Step-by-Step Makeover Process:
Preparation Is Key to a Successful Paint Finish:
- We started this project as we do every other, cleaning the dresser using Fusion™ TSP Alternative. This crucial first step ensures the removal of dirt, oils, and residues, providing a pristine surface for painting.
Applying Ultra Grip for Painting Slick Surfaces:
- For this slick plastic-like surface — we applied a layer of Fusion™ Ultra Grip using a Tough Coat Sponge. This sponge has a shaped handle that helps you glide the sponge across the surface for even pressure. A thin coat of Ultra Grip dried overnight will ensure excellent adhesion of your Fusion Mineral Paint.
Painting Pretty in Pink Damask Dresser
For this dresser, we chose the stunning shade Damask from the Fusion Mineral Paint Line. A dusty vintage rose colour. We used a Staalmeester Roller to evenly apply our first layer of Damask.
We let that coat fully dry and then applied a second, thin, coat to ensure full coverage.
Hardware and Trim
Choose a trimming edge that complements the style of your dresser. Sleek and modern, or ornate and vintage, the right trim can make a big difference to the style and look of your piece, and it’s inexpensive to do!
Using a saw, carefully cut your chosen trim to the required lengths. Always double-check your measurements before cutting to ensure a perfect fit. You know the saying “Measure twice cut once” A mitre saw is great for making precise cuts, especially if you need angled corners. You don’t need a fancy saw you can grab mitre snips at the local hardware store or a good old-fashioned hand saw and a mitre box will work too.
Glue those trim pieces on and use some brad nails to hold them in place, fill any gaps with wood filler and paint to match!
We chose these pretty gold pulls for the hardware and used the existing holes to make this makeover easy.
