How to Transform Your Hutch with Lavender Haze in 4 Simple Steps

Upcycling old furniture is an amazing way to give a tired piece a fresh start. Imagine your hutch as a blank canvas—ready to become a beautiful and functional part of your home. Here’s how you can easily transform an old or thrifted hutch with Lavender Haze.

Materials You’ll Need:

• Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Lavender Haze
• Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Casement
• Fusion TSP Alternative (for cleaning)
• Fusion Lavender Scented Clear Wax
• Staalmeester Flat Brush
• Staalmeester Artist’s Brush for trim and rounded columns
• Staalmeester Round Natural Bristle Waxing Brush
• Sanding Sponges

Step-by-Step Guide to Your DIY Hutch Makeover

Step 1: Prep the Surface

To properly prepare the piece for painting, we found it easier to take the full top apart, separating the two round columns, shelf, and top back of the hutch. Give the entire hutch a good cleaning with Fusion TSP Alternative to remove any dirt or residue. If you wish you can scuff-sand the old yellowed lacquered finish to ensure the surface is nice and smooth for a flawless finish.

Step 2: Freshen the Interior

To brighten up the interior cabinets, apply a few coats of Casement. This creates a lovely contrast with the exterior colour and adds a fresh, clean look to the piece. Typically 2-3 coats will give you full coverage. Be sure to wait about 30 minutes – 2 hours between coats. 

Step 3: Apply Lavender Haze

For the rest of the piece, apply Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Lavender Haze using a Staalmeester flat brush for the main surfaces, and an artist’s brush for the trim and rounded columns. The paint glides on smoothly, and two coats will provide excellent coverage, resulting in a soft, even finish. Lavender Haze adds a calming, cottage charm—perfect for transforming your hutch into a standout feature.

Step 4: Distressing and Finishing Touches

Once the paint dried, we distressed the hutch to achieve a more rustic, cottage-core look. Use 60-grit sandpaper to distress mainly along the edges, revealing the old white finish underneath. This gives the piece character and a lived-in feel.

To protect the paint, apply Fusion Lavender Scented Clear Wax using a round waxing brush. The wax adds a subtle sheen and feels so nice on the furniture! Finally, we updated the hardware by applying Gold Metallic Paint, giving it an elegant, polished look.
