Even with the right prep and application, accidents can occur and the odd paint touch-up may need to happen. Achieving that perfect colour match can be tricky. Fusion™ Mineral Paint, with its high-quality pigments and 100% industrial-grade acrylic formula, promises a finish that’s not only beautiful but durable. This comprehensive guide will walk you through understanding the unique aspects of Fusion™ Mineral Paint and how to master paint touch-ups for your furniture.
Understanding Fusion™ Mineral Paint’s Unique Formula
Fusion™ Mineral Paint is not your ordinary paint. Designed specifically for furniture, it boasts a formulation that includes industrial-grade acrylic. This mix ensures that the paint adheres to virtually any surface without the need for a primer or top coat. It’s incredibly durable and offers a matte finish that many DIY enthusiasts and professionals adore.
Common Challenges with Touching Up Fusion™ Mineral Paint
1. Colour Variation Over Time:
Paint can change colour slightly as it ages, influenced by exposure to humidity, and the environment. An example of that would be a painted cooker hood. Due to the environment (heat, humidity, airborne grease) may differ from the surrounding painted cabinets. Or surfaces that have been cleaned with harsh chemicals.
Since Fusion™ Mineral Paint is often used on items that see a lot of wear and tear, like furniture, these factors can accelerate changes in hue.
2. Differences in Application Techniques:
How you apply the paint can affect the final look. Brushes, rollers, or even sponges can leave slightly different textures and thicknesses, leading to noticeable differences when touching up.
3. Sheen and Finish Inconsistency
Although Fusion™ Mineral Paint dries to a matte finish, variations in application thickness can affect the sheen. Touch-ups might absorb differently on surfaces that have been sealed or worn down. Thick layers can sometimes reflex a little more light and look shiny.
4. Batch Variation:
We thoroughly test each batch to strictly adhere to our original colour recipe, but as with all paint brands there can be a slight variation.
Slight variations can occur between batches due to the nature of pigments.
However, this is very rare and if anything extremely minimal. We process our paint batches in high volume to mitigate variations. We indicate the batch number on the bottom so you can ensure to find the same batch to continue your projects if not enough was purchased initially.
When painting a larger project it is always recommended to combine multiple pints (if needed) into one larger container to avoid any variances in the colour. Be sure to stir the paint thoroughly or shake before starting any project to ensure the pigment has not settled.
The paint colour in the container is not a reliable representation of the colour, nor when it is wet. Only once it is painted out and dried on an identical surface can it be compared for accuracy.
When working on projects that require more than 1 pint of paint we offer 16 of our top colours in 2L containers or you can combine your pints to assure consistency for the complete project.
Other items that may contribute to visual colour contrasts are multiple surface sheens, textures, and room lighting.
Tips for Successful Touch-Ups Using Fusion™ Mineral Paint
Proper Preparation is Key: Before touching up, clean the surface thoroughly to remove any oils, dust, or debris that could prevent the paint from adhering properly. Use our TSP Alternative to get a squeaky clean surface.
Check Batch Numbers: If possible, alway use the same batch numbers to do your touch ups. If the same batch number is not possible then refinish the entire effected area.
Use the Same Application Method: To minimize differences, use the same tools that was used originally—whether that was a brush, or roller. This helps match the texture as closely as possible.
Feathering: When applying the touch-up, feather the edges by lightly brushing away from the center of the touch-up area towards the existing paint. This technique helps blend the new paint with the old for a more seamless look.
Consider a Full Coat: If the touched-up areas are still noticeable, applying a full coat to the entire surface may be the best approach to ensure uniformity, especially for larger or more visible pieces.
Good drying time: Fusion™ Mineral Paint typically dries to the touch in about an hour or so. However, waiting 2-4 hours or overnight before applying a second coat is recommended for the best results.
Sealed surfaces: If the project you are attempting to touch up has a sealer on it, it is highly unlikely you will get a good colour match. The sealer will change the sheen and colour slightly. In this scenario it would be best to consider reapplying to the whole area. Fusion will go straight over a cleaned, cured surface sealed with Tough Coat, or Stain and Finishing Oil.
