Looking to refresh your space with a quick weekend project? This easy bench makeover is proof that a little paint and stain can go a long way. If you’re working with an old thrifted piece or something collecting dust in the garage, you can transform it into a stylish, modern-meets-rustic feature with inspiration from this simple 3-Step bench makeover.
Before: Worn and Tired Bench
This bench had solid bones but was looking worse for wear. The finish was dated, and the piece lacked any real character. With a little elbow grease and two of our favourite Fusion™ products, it got a brand-new lease on life.

Materials Needed:
- TSP Alternative
- Orbital Sander
- 120 Grit Sandpaper
- SFO: Light Oak
- Cheap Chippy Brush (to apply stain)
- Fusion Mineral Paint Everett
- 5” Fusion Paint Brush (to apply Everett)
Step 1: Sand to Raw Wood
We started by sanding the top of the bench back to raw wood. This allows the grain to shine through and preps the surface perfectly for staining. You can use a hand sander or sanding block. Be sure to remove any existing finish or sheen for best results.

Step 2: Add Warmth with Stain and Finishing Oil

Next, we applied Stain and Finishing Oil in Light Oak to the top. This oil-based stain is a game-changer for adding both colour and protection in one step. The warm, natural tone of Light Oak highlights the wood grain beautifully while sealing the surface for durability. Just brush it on, wait a few minutes, and wipe away the excess. Done!

Step 3: Paint the Base in Everett

For a bold contrast, we painted the base in Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Everett, a deep, moody green with grey undertones. Thanks to Fusion’s built-in topcoat and excellent adhesion, there was no need for primer or a separate sealant, just two coats for a smooth, matte finish.

The Final Look: Modern Rustic Charm

The result is a striking two-tone bench that blends warmth and earthiness with a modern silhouette. Perfect for a hallway, mudroom, or entryway, this refreshed piece now feels intentional and timeless.

You Can Do It Too
Projects like this one prove that you don’t need a lot of time or materials to create something beautiful. With just sandpaper, a brush, and two Fusion™ favourites, this bench got the upgrade it deserved.
