Some furniture makeovers are so dramatic that they don’t even look like the same piece when they’re done. That’s exactly the case with this classic orange oak dresser—a solid wood piece in excellent condition but in desperate need of an update. Instead of letting that dated orange finish steal the spotlight, we refreshed this oak dresser makeover with a two-tone look, combining rich black paint with a stained wood top to showcase the natural oak grain beautifully.

The result? A jaw-dropping transformation that keeps the warmth of real wood while adding modern contrast—proving that sometimes, the best pieces are already in your home, just waiting for a little paint and stain!
Supplies Used:
- Fusion™ TSP Alternative (for cleaning)
- Orbital Sander + 120 Grit Sandpaper (to strip the top)
- Hand Sanding Tool (for edges and small areas)
- Fusion™ Stain & Finishing Oil (SFO) in Light Oak (for a natural wood finish)
- Chippy Brush (to apply stain)
- Applicator Sponge (to wipe back excess stain)
- Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Coal Black (for the base)
- Staalmeester® Roller (for smooth, even paint application)
- Small Angled Flat Brush (for painting drawer edges)
- New Silver Handles (to replace the outdated knobs)
Step 1: Clean & Prep
Before starting any makeover, it’s important to clean your piece properly. We wiped down the entire dresser using Fusion™ TSP Alternative, which removes dirt, grease, and residue without the need for rinsing. This ensures the best possible adhesion for both paint and stain.

Step 2: Sanding the Top
The orange oak finish had to go, so we used an orbital sander with 120-grit sandpaper to bring the top down to bare wood. We also used a small sanding tool to make sure we got the grooves. Consistent sanding ensures an even stain application, so taking the time to get this step right makes all the difference.

Step 3: Staining for a Natural Wood Finish
To keep that gorgeous wood grain front and center, we applied Fusion™ Stain & Finishing Oil (SFO) in Light Oak using a chippy brush. After letting it sit for 15 minutes, we wiped away the excess with an applicator sponge, revealing a soft, natural finish that enhances the wood’s character.

Step 4: Painting the Base
For a striking contrast, we painted the dresser base in Coal Black—one of the richest, deepest blacks in the Fusion™ Mineral Paint line. Using a Staalmeester® Roller, we got smooth, even coverage across the large flat surfaces, while a small angled brush helped with the edges and drawer fronts.

Two coats were all it took to achieve full, luxurious coverage. And since Fusion™ Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat, no extra sealing was required—just paint and go!
Step 5: The Finishing Touches
The final step in any great makeover is updating the hardware. We swapped out the old round wooden knobs for sleek silver handles, instantly modernizing the entire piece.

The Final Reveal
This dresser went from outdated and orange to bold, modern, and timeless. The contrast between the rich Coal Black base and the warm wood-stained top gives it a high-end designer look, while the new silver handles add a sleek finishing touch. If you’ve got a classic oak piece sitting around, don’t let its dated colour hold you back—grab some paint and stain and give it a whole new life!
