Sometimes we need to have a piece of furniture that has multiple different functions. This Dining to Console Table Restoration needed a little TLC, but other than that, was exactly what we needed!

Here’s what you’re going to need for this project:

• Fusion TSP Alternative
• 200 Grit Sanding Pad
• Oyster Bar Milk Paint by Fusion
• Fusion Ultra Grip
• Staalmeester Flat Brush
• Fusion Gel Stain – Greystone
• Chip Brush

Prep

This unique dining table that closes up to a console table had lots of wear and tear on the tabletop, and in some areas, the previous owners had started stripping off the old finish so we decided to continue stripping the top and extensions to the bare wood with stripping gel. When stripping furniture, the stripper will always leave a gummy residue.  We recommend doing a final clean-up with Fusion TSP Alternative and water.  For the rest of the table, we just did a quick scuff-sanding.

Painting with Milk Paint

After stripping, sanding and cleaning, we mixed a batch of  Fusion Milk Paint in the colour “Oyster Bar” using equal parts water and Milk Paint Powder.  We would recommend that you mix up a bit more paint than needed as when mixing different batches, the colour may change slightly.  To the mixed paint, we added Fusion Bonding Agent, Ultra Grip.  You do not need to add Bonding Agent to raw wood, but since we had not stripped the bottom of the table and legs, the Bonding Agent is required to ensure proper adhesion if you are going for a clean and sleek finish. The table required three coats of paint.

Topcoat Options

A great topcoat for this tabletop would be our Stain & Finishing Oil in Natural.

If you wanted to richen or deepen the look, you could apply one coat of Fusion Gel Stain in the colour “Greystone” in long and continuous strokes.  The gel stain is brushed on, and not wiped off.  The gel stain dries to a matte finish. Once everything was done and dried, we were ready to reveal the final result of this Dining to Console Table Restoration!
