Are you dreaming of that chic Pottery Barn aesthetic without breaking the bank? Create a Pottery Barn Dupe with Gel Stain! With Fusion Mineral Paint’s Gel Stain, achieving a beautiful, rustic wood finish is not only possible but also super easy and incredibly durable. This blog will take you through the step-by-step process of using Gel Stain to transform a simple piece of furniture into a high-end faux wood look. We’ll also cover the pros and cons, tips for achieving the perfect finish, and techniques to create a stunning aged effect.
Why Choose Gel Stain?
Our Gel Stain is essentially an ultra-durable, oil-based tinted urethane, making it perfect for a variety of surfaces. Whether you’re working on a coffee table, a dresser, or even flooring, this product has got you covered! It dries to the touch within a day and becomes extra hard and durable within a week—perfect for high-traffic areas like tabletops. Plus, it’s a one-step finish, which means you can add colour and protection all in one go!
Application Made Easy
Applying Gel Stain is a breeze! Here’s how to do it in just a few simple steps:
- Start with a Fresh Canvas: Begin by applying your base paint from the Fusion Mineral Paint collection. Start with a painted base that complements the Pottery Barn look. We used Fusion Mineral Paint’s Cathedral Taupe, a soft, neutral grey, but other tones work well depending on your desired finish:
- For a warmer result, try Mustard or Prairie Sunset.
- For a more neutral look, Champlain, Cashmere or Chateau.
Allow the base coat to dry for 12 hours before applying Gel Stain. Using Double Espresso Gel Stain provides a rich, warm brown perfect for a faux wood finish. Stir the Gel Stain for several minutes to distribute any settled pigments thoroughly. This will ensure even colour application.
Get Ready to Gel
Once your paint is set, it’s time to grab your Gel Stain! Be sure to give it a really good mix as all the good stuff likes to settle to the bottom! Use a paint stir stick until uniform. Using a natural bristle brush or a roller, apply the Gel Stain generously over your painted surface. Remember, this isn’t a wipe-on, wipe-off product like our Stain and Finishing Oil, so you’re going to leave it on to create that gorgeous wood finish! We used an old roller because the application does not need to be perfect so if there are any imperfections in it, it’s no problem.
Create the Wood Look: Here’s where the magic happens! After letting the Gel Stain sit for an hour take a tough broom or a textured bristle brush and gently drag it across the surface to create a beautiful wood grain effect. This technique not only adds character but also helps to hide imperfections—perfect for those DIY projects that might need a little extra love.
Let It Dry: The Gel Stain will dry to the touch in approximately 4 hours. If you want to add another coat for a richer finish, check for tackiness. If it’s still tacky, wait a couple more hours before reassessing.
Enjoy Your Flawless Finish: The end result is a stunning matte finish that adds depth and charm to your furniture, all while being incredibly durable!

Get Creative with your Pottery Barn Dupe with Gel Stain!
Feel free to experiment with different base colours and top coats to achieve a variety of stunning looks. Each colour varies in pigmentation and opacity, allowing you to play around and find what works best for your style. Just remember, the more coats you apply (except for Patina), the more opaque the finish will become while maintaining that beautiful matte sheen.
Tips for Using Gel Stain Effectively
- Watch for Product Buildup: After a few strokes, check your broom for product buildup. Use a cotton rag to wipe off excess before dragging it across the surface again.
- Keep the Workspace Dust-Free: Gel Stain attracts dust while drying, so ensure your workspace is clean.
- Freezing Your Roller: If you plan to reuse your roller for similar projects, wrap it in a Ziploc bag and store it in the freezer to keep it from drying out.
- Experiment with Base Colors: Your base colour affects the final undertone. Warmer bases like Mustard add a hint of yellow, while cooler tones like Sterling or Cathedral Taupe (like we did) create a more neutral brown. Test on a hidden section to see how the colours layer together.
Pros and Cons of Using Gel Stain for Faux Wood Effects
Pros
- Control and Flexibility: Gel Stain’s thick consistency sits on top of surfaces, giving you control over colour depth and texture.
- Faux Wood Grain: With the right tools, Gel Stain allows you to create a realistic wood grain pattern.
- Long Open Time: The extended working time lets you adjust and blend the stain without feeling rushed.
- Durability: Once cured, Gel Stain offers a strong, washable surface ideal for furniture that sees regular use.
Cons
- Extended Drying Time: Unlike water-based products, Gel Stain takes longer to dry, about 12 hours to the touch (3-5 days to cure fully), which may delay project completion.
- Cleanup Requirements: Gel Stain requires odourless mineral spirits for cleanup. Gloves and proper ventilation are recommended, especially for first-time users.
