When painting Milk Paint by Fusion over raw bare wood, you need to do very little to no prep at all! The beauty of milk paint on a wood surface is that you still see and feel the wood grain. This is completely unique to anything else out there in the paint world. Don’t worry, you’ll still get full opaque coverage over the wood, with a solid colour, as often many think that Milk Paint is more like a stain. It can actually be anything you want it to be by controlling how much water to powder ratio you add. Follow along in this blog to see how with Bed Posts & Night Table in Amalfi Coast.

Prep
We’ve been crushing hard on these custom-made bedposts built from raw lumber – perfect for Milk Paint – no prep! We simply mixed our Fusion Milk Paint Powder in the colour Amalfi Coast, 1 part powder to 1 part water. We stirred it and let it sit for a few minutes and then mixed again, making sure the bottom was well mixed. It’s important to regularly stir the bottom of the paint up as the pigments settle quickly, which means your colour can vary should you just dip it into the top of the container. But before we did any painting, we decided to do a quick cleaning with Fusion’s TSP Alternative.
Painting
We painted 1 coat of Amalfi Coast on the bed posts, and waited 20 minutes, then applied a second coat. Milk Paint dries so quickly, typically between 15-30 minutes and can be re-coated once it is dry to the touch. You’ll notice that the colour varies and goes chalky as it is drying, don’t worry the true colour will pop when you apply the top coat!
That’s the magic moment as we call it! We ended up putting 2 coats on for full coverage. We thought why not tie everything together with a cute matching side table? Our prep was a little different on this as the surface was previously stained and had a glossy finish on it. We didn’t feel like doing much prep on this piece so we cleaned the dirt off of it with a quick wipe-down. We wanted the milk paint to adhere really well and not have any chipping so we added the Fusion Ultra Grip, aka Bonding Agent into the Milk Paint.
When applying Milk Paint mixed with Bonding Agent we like to encourage you to wait 12 hours between coats for the best results. That being said, you can get away with re-coating after a couple of hours.
We then applied two coats of Amalfi Coast using a Staalmeester round brush. When fully dried we added some gold brass steel legs to the drawers and spray painted the hardware pulls to match.
The Magic of Topcoats
It’s time for the magic moment! That’s right, the Milk Paint comes to life – we applied our Furniture Wax in clear. It’s really easy to use wax, just apply a small amount. See everything you need to know about wax here
We applied with a brush, let it dry and then buffed the dresser with a lint-free rag.
