Creating a Non-Committal Accent Wall

Sometimes we have little strokes of brilliance! So, you want a fun creative accent wall, but not quite ready to fully commit to it for life right? Well, we have the solution for you for Creating a Non-Committal Accent Wall!

Grab some peel and stick wallpaper, and paint it in your style!

We grabbed one roll of vinyl removable wallpaper and wanted to match the accent wall with the painted doors of our sideboard in the colour “Casa Rosa”.

The Steps to Creating a Non-Committal Accent Wall

For this blend, we mixed up our milk paint powder with water and hand mixed at first with a small whisk and then we attached the hand whisk to a drill and mixed it until the paint and powder became really smooth, with no lumps. We then added Bonding Agent to our mixed paint to ensure maximum adherence as the finish on this piece was quite slick, and we didn’t want any chipping or flaking paint. If it was a duller finish, we could have tried getting away with not using the Bonding Agent (aka Fusion Ultra Grip)

It’s amazing the coverage you can get with some of the Milk Paint colours with even one coat, however, when you add bonding agent, it tends to thin out the paint a bit and make it more transparent. This piece needed two coats. We waited 4 hours between coats to give the bonding agent milk paint mix enough time to start to cure, if you can wait 12 hours that’s the best!

So we measured out the strips of wallpaper needed and rolled right over the old wallpaper. We experimented with adding Bonding Agent, aka Fusion Ultra Grip and also without this extra adhesive primer. With the Bonding Agent, you can see it adhered really well. The strip without the Ultra Grip chipped quite a bit.

Quick Tip

Milk Paint doesn’t like to adhere to surfaces that are not porous, so if it’s a smooth, slick, or synthetic surface like vinyl, you will need to add the Bonding Agent to ensure good adhesion and no chipping, if that’s the look you’re doing for.

It chipped and you can actually see the markings of the brick where we didn’t use the bonding agent.

We thought it was a really fun look and could make some interesting backgrounds. We rolled two coats of paint onto the wallpaper. After it dried, we applied the removable wallpaper to the wall.
