I’m often asked questions on how to achieve a very particular look for a faux finish effect and how to achieve it using Fusion Mineral Paint or Milk Paint. Tristan, a friend of mine who is a product stylist sent me a text of this inspirational image below asking for some advice, and instantly I said “Come on over I’ll help you create it!”. Photography backdrops come in all shapes, sizes and colours, however, if you’re looking for an inexpensive DIY version, check out this easy-to-follow DIY Photography Back Drop for how we created this look in under an hour!
Here is the inspiration image which was from the blog Call me Cupcake
I know, I’m hungry already… but gotta stay focused on this DIY project!
Tristan needed a photography backdrop for a shoot that she had the following day, so being able to use Fusion and Fresco which dries so fast we were able to complete this in just an hour!
Supplies
- 1 MDF 1/2 inch Board cut to size
- 1 Pint Coal Black
- 1 Pint Ash
- 1 Natural Bristle brush for added texture ( or a brush of your choosing)
- 1 Packet of Fresco Texturizing Powder.
In the inspiration image, you can see very subtle changes in the depth of the background, so I chose two very similar colours. One of my favourite techniques is using very similar colours tone on tone for interesting unique depth.
Coal Black is our deepest most jet black paint colour in our Fusion Mineral Paint line.
Ash, is a softer black, a little more like a charcoal paint colour.
I simply added 1 part Fresco to 1 part paint and mixed for about 30 seconds.

Step 1. Mix Fresco & Coal Black. Apply in all directions with a rough bristle brush allowing texture to sit on the surface. Let dry for 20 minutes, or until dry to the touch.
Step 2. Mix Fresco & Ash. Apply sparingly over top, however not fully covering the previous layer so that you can see the slight variations.
Let dry and you’re done!
And here is the final result! The focus on the subject and the softness of the background allows us to see the most subtle changes in light and do not distract from the subject.
Seeing other people’s inspiration photos always gives me so much inspiration! I always want to help people achieve their desired outcomes through the use of Paint.
Grab some Fresco and Fusion Mineral Paint and have fun! Please share with us your desired look and I would LOVE to help you with achieving that technique.
