We gave this ARMOIRE a whole new makeover with Milk paint by Fusion in the colour “Skinny Jeans”. This Armoire had been previously painted but had a dull finish.
Prep
Prep for this piece was simple, a good wash down using TSP Alternative was all that was needed. The previous finish was dull and in good sound condition so there was no need to scuff sand.
Skinny Jeans
Like your favourite pair of skinny jeans, this is a perfectly worn-in wash of blue. It’s light enough to act as a neutral and cool enough to complement any colour scheme. Perfect for this armoire.
Mixing Milk Paint
We mixed with equal parts water and Skinny Jeans Milk Paint. To mix simply stir with your brush, a whisk or even a paint stick. Watch this video on how to mix milk paint.
TOP TIP: You can cover up any leftover paint and store it in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.
If your piece was shiny or glossy, and you didn’t want any chipping you could add the Bonding Agent to the mixed paint. The Bonding Agent will assure maximum adherence. Since our piece had a dull finish, the Milk Paint will adhere without this and not produce any chipping or flaking as the surface is dull.
The scary first coat
As you can see with the first coat, it can look a little scary! This is to be expected, so don’t worry! Milk Paint has a thinner consistency so don’t worry if it looks a little patchy, each subsequent coat looks even and smoother. It took us 2 coats for full coverage on this piece. If you were using a lighter, more white colour you could need 3 coats.
Sealing Milk Paint
This is the best part of Milk Painting! This is where you see the colour truly pop, plus the sealer also helps to protect against any future water damage.
When Milk Paint dries (it only takes approx 30 mins) it looks almost chalky, the magic really happens when you apply your topcoat! It just POPS the colour.
If you like a super smooth finish you can lightly sand with a 400 grit before applying the top coat of your choice. This piece was smooth enough. We used our luscious Furniture wax to seal it with one of our Staalmeester natural bristle brushes.
