Romantic Dresser Chateau and Rose Water. Sometimes even the prettiest pieces can have a little ugly in them. Whether it’s lots of dings and scratches or a bad paint job, there is often some elbow grease to be had when refinishing furniture. These two pieces were both marketplace finds but both needed quite a bit of work. The desk itself needed a whole new top due to water damage and the chair was covered in old paint.
Below is a list of supplies you’ll need to complete a similar project.
- Fusion TSP Alternative + Wiping Cloths
- Fusion Mineral Paint Chateau
- Fusion Mineral Paint Rosewater
- Fusion SFO Natural
- Fusion SFO Cappuccino
- Aspen Wood Panel
- Router with Beveled Bit
- Electric Sander with Sandpaper 120-220 Grit
Replacing the wooden top
We removed the top from the desk because it was too far gone from water damage. So we opted to buy a wood panel from our local hardware store to replace it. While the top was off, we took the opportunity to give the pieces a good deep clean by vacuuming away any dust and using Fusions TSP Alternative to wash the piece. Mixing a 4:1 (water to TSP Alternative) ratio is the perfect solution to put in a spray bottle. Simply spray and use a sponge or wiping cloth to remove dust and residue from the surface.
Next you will want to cut the panel to size and place it over the top of the desk. We used the previous top as a template for size. We used wood screws to attach it to the base, making the installation extremely easy.
Once your top is secured in place, use a router to add the bevelled edge detail around the top. You can leave the top as is for a more rustic look, but because we were going for an elegant and dainty look we decided a simple edge was perfect. Using a router is quite simple and easy. Place it at your starting point and move at an even more consistent speed and pressure. Make sure not to stay in one place too long or your risk leaving burn marks.
Milk Paint & SFO
Since we wanted to go for a fairytale boho look we paired two of our recent colours together. Chateau is the perfect neutral bringing in taupe and white tones while rose water adds a fun and feminine blush to the mix. We painted the desk base in Chateau and the chair in Rose Water.
In total we only needed 2 coats for full coverage on both pieces. After our last coat dried for 24 hours, we took a sanding sponge and lightly distressed the raised areas and ornate details. This helps to bring out those part of the piece you want to emphasize without looking overly rustic.
For the top and legs, we wanted to have a medium warm brown colour. We blended a ½ & ½ mix of Stain and Finishing Oil in Cappuccino in Natural to give us a very light brown stain that complimented Chateau. Then we top coated with a final coat of SFO Natural after 48 hours for additional sheen and protection.
Romantic Dresser Chateau & Rose Water
When we envisioned this piece we knew there was going to be a strong feminine element to it and that is exactly what we got! The combination of Chateau and Rose Water is so elegant!
Chateau really is a beautiful, creamy taupe colour that leans white in bright daylight with coffee undertones in a darker light. The distressing really brings out the warmth.
The stain mix we made also adds a rustic element to this which perfectly balances our look. The beauty on raw wood top looks just as beautiful and weathered as the original wood legs to this piece.
The hardware looks beautiful paired with this colour. All it needed was a deep cleaning and now it’s jewellery for this dresser.
The chair is almost unrecognizable. Before that pretty cross detail in the back was almost non-existent, but after a couple of coats of Rose Water, it’s perfectly highlighted. What a pretty colour to compliment the neutrals of the desk.
We didn’t know that boho fairytale was a style, but now we can say that Fusion pioneered the trend with this look! Will you use this combination in your future?
