Tools and Materials Needed:
- Fusion Mineral Paint, Willowbank
- TSP Alternative
- Sanding Block
- Staalmeester Roller
- Staalmeester Round Brush
- Staalmeester Small Angled Brush
Five Step Guide to Refinishing Your Table:
Step 1: Preparing the Table
Begin by cleaning your side table with Fusion’s TSP Alternative. This will ensure that the surface is free of any residues or oils that could prevent the paint from adhering properly. Simply mix the TSP Alternative with a 1:1 ratio with water and spray your furniture piece – wipe with a lint free cloth.
Step 2: Sanding
Next, use a medium-grit sanding block to sand the table, focusing especially on areas where there are remnants of old finishes or blemishes. For this project, I needed to remove an unfinished milk paint sample from the top of the table. Sand until the surface feels smooth to the touch.
Step 3: Cleaning Again
Once sanding is complete, it’s important to clean the table again with the TSP Alternative to remove any dust or particles that resulted from the sanding process. This will help achieve a cleaner, more professional finish.
Step 4: Applying the First Coat of Paint
Start painting the first coat. Use the Staalmeester Roller for the flat surfaces on the top of the table. This tool helps apply the paint evenly and smoothly. For the detailed areas on the top and the bottom half of the table, switch to the Staalmeester Round Brush, which allows for more precision. Finally, for the intricate details and the legs of the table, use the Staalmeester Small Angled Brush. This brush is excellent for small corners and edges.
Step 5: Applying the Second Coat
After allowing the first coat to dry completely, apply the second coat using the same tools and techniques as in Step 4. A second layer will ensure even coverage and deepen the colour, making your table look fully restored and vibrant.
Finishing Touches
Once the second coat has dried, inspect your table for any missed spots or potential improvements. If needed, apply a touch-up using the appropriate brushes. You might also consider sealing the paint with a topcoat for added protection, although Fusion Mineral Paint has a built-in topcoat component. A top coat is only necessary on pieces that will get a lot of wear and tear or if you’d like to achieve a sheen finish.
