A pop of pink is a fun way to bring colour into your home and the range of beautiful blush colours can give you a variety of design styles to decorate with. Pink can be considered a modern colour, however, it is quickly proving to be just as timeless as whites and beiges, especially in the latest Fusion release colour “Rose Water.” This beautiful shade is inspired by steeped roses and the shade is perfect for an accent or feature colour. In this project, we wanted to brighten up a thrift store dresser and make it a statement piece while featuring all its lovely details. From the spoon-carved details to the original glamourous hardware, this dresser now looks sophisticated and elegant in Rose Water.

Prep
Cleaning is a huge part of prepping your furniture for paint. Paint can’t adhere to your surface if there is dirt, grease or grime blocking the paint from gripping to your substrate. Fusion TSP is perfect for breaking down those substances and giving you a nice, clean surface to work with. We like to dilute Fusion TSP to a 1:5 ratio of warm water and transfer it to a spray bottle for easier application.
Then you can spray your surface and work on a section at a time without oversaturating your project. Use wiping cloths to remove the dirt and grease away from the furniture once it’s been sprayed and scrubbed.
Next, you’ll want to sand. You don’t always have to sand your furniture to bare wood. A scuff sand gives you plenty of tooth on your furniture for the paint to adhere. For this project, we used an orbital sander to remove the previous finish on the top completely. We wanted to go for a raw wood look. For the base, we scuff sanded with 180-grit paper to break the previous finish and dull the surface. You will also want to give it a second cleaning with your TSP solution to remove sanding dust so you have a clean surface for your paint.
Paint it Beautiful!
Now it’s time to put the pretty paint on the pretty furniture! The Staalmeester round brush is a versatile brush. It gives you plenty of options for wide surface coverage while also allowing you to maneuver into ornate details, or in this case, recessed carvings. Between the brush and paint, we were able to get 2 coats of Rose Water on the dresser for full coverage with one hour of dry time in between.
After the last coat was dry, we took a sanding block to distress the raised areas and carvings for a natural, worn look.
Because Fusion has a built-in topcoat, we decided not to use an additional topcoat and enjoy the matte sheen on the finish.
Isn’t a pop of pink pretty?
Now we have a beautiful statement piece that can function in so many different ways.
We love how the distressing brings out all those lovely details that would have been missed with darker colours. Distressing can really add a level of elegance to a piece if done correctly.
The hardware also pops against the pretty colour. Before it looked dull and dark against the original finish. A few spritzes with Fusion TSP removed years of dirt off the hardware and brought back its pretty shine.
We hope you enjoyed this Pop of Pink Makeover! We can’t wait to see the lovely pieces you create with this stunning colour!
