While not absolutely necessary, sanding helps the paint adhere better, giving it a smoother, more matte surface to grip onto. However, in this instance I sanded it to remove a few scratches from the top, leaving it in great shape for painting and getting a nice smooth finish.
Tip: Sanding shiny surfaces can help paint go on more evenly and eliminate imperfections. Always follow up with a thorough cleaning to get rid of any dust.
Step 2: Time to Paint
With the prep done, it was time to bring this table to life! I chose Fort York Red, a bold, rich colour that’s guaranteed to make any piece stand out. Red can sometimes be tricky to get full coverage, but using 3 thin coats of paint ensures a smooth, even finish without streaks. I applied each coat with one of Fusion’s economy brushes, which made the application easy and seamless.
Why 3 coats? Thin coats are always better for full, even coverage—especially with bold colours like red. Plus, they dry faster and prevent drips or brush marks.
Step 3: Drying Time
Once the final coat of Fort York Red was applied, I let the paint dry completely. Fusion Mineral Paint dries quickly, but it’s always a good idea to wait at least 12 hours to ensure everything is fully dry before moving on to the next step. This will also allow the paint to cure a bit, ensuring that it’s ready for the topcoat.
Patience pays off! Taking your time here ensures a flawless finish when applying your topcoat.
Step 4: The Magic of Ultra Guard Satin
Now comes the finishing touch! Since this side table will likely see daily use, especially with things like water glasses, I wanted to add extra protection. Ultra Guard Satin is perfect for this—it not only adds durability but also enhances the richness of Fort York Red, making it pop even more with a soft, beautiful sheen.
I applied the Ultra Guard Satin with a synthetic brush, using thin, even coats. Ultra Guard has a longer open time, meaning it doesn’t dry too fast, allowing you to get a smooth, streak-free finish without rushing. This is especially useful for larger or more detailed pieces.
Pro Tip: Always apply in one direction for the smoothest results, and avoid overworking the product. Let it self-level for that flawless finish.
