Dresser Transformation with Mod Mustard. These dark wood dressers are becoming a thing of the past since you can easily transform them with a coat of paint! We wanted to really brighten up the look of this one, Mod Mustard was our go to! With a little elbow grease and some paint, watch as we modernize this dresser transformation with Mod Mustard in 3 simple steps!
Here’s what you’ll need for this project:
- Paint Stripping Gel (If required)
- Fusion TSP Alternative
- Mod Mustard Milk Paint by Fusion
- Staalmeester Flat Brush
- Staalmeester Round Brush
- 400 Grit Sandpaper
- Fusion Stain & Finishing Oil: Cappuccino
- Fusion Clear Wax
Prep
Our initial thought was just to scuff-sand all over with an orbital sander, but in doing so we realized that the original stain on the dresser was so thin that we decided it would not be much of an effort to just strip most of the dresser to the raw wood with stripping gel. After stripping furniture, there is always some gummy residue left so we cleaned off the residue with Fusion TSP Alternative and water.
After the prep was done, we mixed up a batch of Fusion Milk Paint in the colour “Mod Mustard”.
Painting with Milk Paint
We usually mix equal parts powder and water, but for this colour, because it is a bit more transparent, we added more powder just to slightly thicken it more. Your paint should be the consistency of table cream.
Since most of the dresser was stripped to the raw wood, we did not add any bonding agent.

Milk Paint dries in about 20-30 minutes. At that point, you can apply another coat as needed.
We then added three coats of paint, which were applied with our Staalmeester flat brush.
After the paint dried, we lightly sanded over the paint with 400 grit sandpaper to knock down any bumps left from the powder. With dark colours, you have to be a bit more careful as sanding over the paint may leave white dots, if this happens, the Milk Paint just didn’t have enough time to blend and dissolve before use. This is one of the beauties of this unique paint.

Finishing Products
After sanding we decided to emphasize part of the moulding on the dresser with Fusion Stain & Finishing Oil (aka S&FO) in the colour “Cappuccino” which we thought would look great with the leather pulls we added.
Our last step was to seal the dresser with Fusion Furniture Clear Wax. We applied with a brush, let it dry and then buffed the dresser.
Here’s what we were left with once everything was said and done for this Dresser Transformation with Mod Mustard!
