Let’s explore how these versatile glazes can transform your furniture and decor! Create a Pottery Barn Dupe with Water-Based Glaze: Fast Drying and Customizable!
Why Choose Glaze?
Our Glaze offers a quick drying solution to creating the faux wood pottery barn look that anyone can do in a day! The performance of a professional finish that everyone can achieve! Our Antiquing Glaze offers the perfect wood grain colour, it is lightly tinted to a rich brown for the perfect antiquing look. Our Clear Glaze can be custom-tinted with our paint or metallics for other wood tones!
One of the key benefits of using glazes for faux wood grain effects is their compatibility with various surfaces. Whether you’re working on furniture, walls, or accent pieces, these glazes are designed to deliver the high-end, professional look you’d expect from a specialty finish. And, as water-based products, they are easy to clean up with just soap and water—a perfect choice for any DIY enthusiast.
Application Made Easy: Pottery Barn Dupe with Water-Based Glaze
Applying our Clear or Antiquing Glaze is simple!
1. Prepare Your Surface
Begin by cleaning your piece with TSP Alternative to remove any dust or debris, creating an ideal base to adhere to for the glaze.
This piece was originally a dark brown console table, check out this blog to see how we transformed it into this light, welcoming console with Chateau.
If your project requires a specific undertone, consider adding a base coat of Fusion paint in a complementary shade, like Prairie Sunset for warmth or Sterling for cooler undertones. For this example we used Chateau. Allow it to dry completely—typically around 2 hours.
2. Applying Antiquing Glaze
Antiquing Glaze is already tinted with a rich brown, making it perfect for adding instant age and warmth. Using a brush, apply the glaze liberally over your surface, then wipe back with a soft cloth to control the level of aging. This technique highlights detailed areas, like carvings or edges, adding character and depth.
Creating Wood Grain Texture
If you want to achieve a wood grain effect, take a wood-graining tool or a stiff broom and drag it across the glaze while it’s still wet. This technique helps to mimic the appearance of real wood, giving your furniture that sought-after Pottery Barn charm!
TIP: For a finer grain pattern, use a wood-graining tool or a soft-bristled brush; for a more rustic, bold texture, a broom works wonderfully.
Drying time
Glaze dries quickly to the touch compared to the Stain and Finishing Oil or Gel Stain counterparts – making this option great if you want to complete this project in a day!

Seal the Finish for High-Traffic Areas (Optional)
If your project will encounter lots of potential water like kitchen cabinets, flooring or vanities, we recommend a top coat as the Glaze isn’t as resistant to water as the paint alone. Our Ultra Guard or Tough Coat water-based poly will provide the protection your piece needs while maintaining that gorgeous finish.
Custom Tinting with Clear Glaze for your Pottery Barn Dupe with Water-Based Glaze
Clear Glaze offers endless colour possibilities, allowing you to mix in Fusion paint colours to achieve unique wood effects. Simply add a few drops of your chosen Fusion colour (like Chocolate or Ash) to the Glaze and mix well.
Apply the tinted Clear Glaze with a brush, wiping back as needed. You can also use a graining tool for a faux wood effect. If you want a more artistic, distressed look, consider experimenting with layering different tints and wiping selectively.
