If you’re in love with the chippy look of Milk Paint, we’re going to makeover this dresser using just that technique! We just love finding these restore finds for a great price. Originally painted in a dark black finish, we wanted to lighten it up with Vintage Laurel. Read below for all the details on how to achieve this chippy dresser makeover with the authentic chippy look with Milk paint by Fusion!
To get this project started, here’s what you need:
- Vintage Laurel Milk Paint by Fusion
- Staalmeester One Flat Brush
- Sanding Pads
- TSP Alternative
- Fusion Clear Wax
The Prep
When you’re going for the chippy look, you’ll want a finish that has a slight sheen to it. The paint won’t be able to adhere super well to a shiny surface, so in those areas, the Milk Paint will naturally chip away giving you that super desired chippy look. Our prep for this piece was a super light sanding to slightly de-gloss the surface, without this, the paint would completely all chip away. If applying Milk Paint to a more dull finish, you won’t achieve the chipping effect unless you force it with a resist- more on this later!
The Painting
Let’s whip up a batch of Fusion Milk Paint Powder in the colour “Vintage Laurel”. We mixed equal parts powder and water and stir for about a minute. Two coats of the “Vintage Laurel” was applied with the Staalmeester One flat brush. After the paint dried, we distressed it lightly and sanded with a 400 grit sanding block all over to achieve a smooth finish. We love this modern farmhouse chippy look.
Once the paint dried, you could really see that chipping! For a tutorial on how to achieve a chippy look using Milk Paint by Fusion, check out our video below.
The Finish
Our last step was to seal the dresser with Fusion Furniture Clear Wax. We applied with a brush, let it dry and then buffed the dresser. If your dresser is chipping a lot, we would recommend our Gel Stain & Top Coat from Fusion Mineral Paint to lock it all in and seal it to prevent further chipping.
