China cabinets are usually utilized to store your fine china and dishware, but we took this makeover to a new level. Instead of storing dishes, we are showing it with a collection of faux succulents and plants and we are loving this great display! So follow along to see how you can update your china cabinet for succulent display.
Think out of the box for ideas of what you can do with a china cabinet. Some other ideas would be to showcase your collection of shoes and handbags, hats, and miniature dollhouses. The ideas are endless.
Prep
Our first step was to clean the entire piece with Fusion TSP diluted with water. TSP alternative is a bio-degradable eco-friendly degreaser.
First, we taped all the glass with painter’s tape and scuff-sanded the entire piece to ensure a non-chippy finish. Of course, you can skip this step if you want a chippy look!
Terrarium Milk Paint by Fusion
For this display cabinet, we choose Terrarium.
A muted green inspired by the hues found in a beautiful terrarium garden. Saturated and cool with a hint of blue, this full-of-life shade holds a natural elegance. It really is a beautiful hue.
Mixing Milk Paint
Mix equal parts water and Terrarium Fusion Milk Paint. You might adjust the ratio if you find it is too watery or if you want your paint a little thicker.
To the mixed paint, we added Ultra Grip. We added about the same amount of Ultra Grip as the mixed paint. This was to make sure we had a smooth even modern look as the finish on this piece was quite shiny.
Two coats of Milk paint were applied for full even coverage. We recommend Staalmeester Round Brush to apply the first coat and the Staalmeester Flat Brush for the second coat. It really smooths out the paint.
We wanted a fresh look as a backdrop for our plants so we painted the interior with Fusion Mineral Paint in the colour Picket Fence.
Furniture Wax Finish
Finally, Fusion Clear Wax was applied to seal the milk paint. We repeated the waxing a second time to make sure it was properly sealed and then buffed it to get a lovely lustre.
