We all have those things displayed in our homes that tell a story. It’s a small statue picked up on a Greek island, a bottle of perfume carried home from France. It’s a seashell collection numbering in the hundreds, and each one a memory of the beaches visited and memorialized. These are the pieces that tug at our hearts. They are the ones we can’t resist bringing home because they remind us of special moments, favourite places, or the people we want to hold onto forever. Sometimes those treasures have nothing in common at all. Other times, they become a carefully curated collection of colour, pattern, or texture. No matter what form they take, these meaningful pieces deserve a place to call home. And there’s no better way to showcase the stories of your life than by creating a space in your home dedicated to displaying them.
This built-in hutch is the perfect home for all those memories and treasures. It offers a blank slate with sturdy bones. With just a little love and a fresh coat of paint, it has the potential to become something truly special.
Here is the before of our project:

We sampled several of our most popular blues and ultimately landed on French Eggshell as the winner. It has a beautiful balance of blue and green tones that subtly shift with the light throughout the day.
TIP: When choosing paint for larger built-ins or furniture pieces, it’s always best to test your samples on a generous surface area. Colours can change dramatically depending on light, time of day, and surrounding finishes, so seeing a larger swatch in the actual space ensures you’ll love how it truly behaves once it’s fully painted.

Below is a list of supplies you’ll need to complete a similar project.

- Electric Sander and Sanding Pads/Paper
- Wood filler or wood epoxy
- Disposable Gloves
- Shopvac or Vaccum
- Fusion Mineral Paint “French Eggshell”
- Staalmeester Microfelt Roller
- Fusion Mineral Paint Ultra Guard “Satin”
- Peel and Stick Wallpaper (Optional)
Furniture Prep
As with prepping furniture, the first step in preparing built-in pieces is making sure you’re working with a solid, ready surface. Start by completely clearing the shelves so you’re working with a blank slate. This gives you a clear view of the structure itself and allows you to properly assess what you’re working with. From there, you can identify any repairs that need to be made. Wipe down with Fusion TSP alternative to clean the surface.

We scuff sanded using a coarse grit to smooth out any imperfections left from the previous paint job and to create a bit of “tooth” for the new finish to adhere to. This step helps ensure a smoother, more durable result once the paint is applied. When dried, sand until smooth and flat.

Next, we moved on to filling any deep gouges, dents, and imperfections. Since we also removed the glass doors on each side of the hutch, we took the time to fill the previous hardware holes for a seamless finish.
You can use a variety of fillers for this step, but we prefer KwikWood epoxy putty sticks because they cure quickly and rock-hard. Once cured, they resist shrinking with temperature changes, which helps maintain a smooth surface and prevents the paint from cracking over time.

Once sanding is complete, use your vacuum to remove the larger dust and debris. Then follow up with a secondary cleaning just to make sure the surface is extra clean.

Be sure to wear a face mask or use a dustless sanding system to keep cleanup manageable and protect yourself from breathing in the dust.

Paint & Finish
Finally, we were ready for paint! We chose the colour “French Eggshell” because it offered exactly what we were looking for. A beautiful blue with rich green undertones that adds a wave of colour and character. Our goal was to create that perfect chameleon colour: one that could lean more blue or more green depending on the surrounding décor, the lighting, and even the time of day.

We started with a very thin first coat of paint and allowed it to dry overnight. The key to achieving a buttery-smooth finish is using a Staalmeester microfelt roller and applying thin, even coats of Fusion, gradually building coverage with each layer rather than trying to achieve full opacity in one pass.
In the comparison below, you can see what a single coat looks like next to three coats, as well as how dramatically lighting can influence the final appearance. The first photo, showing one coat, was taken in the morning light, while the third and final coat was captured in the evening, where the richer depth and full coverage really come through.

The last finishing touches are what truly elevate the piece and bring it all together. We added beautiful back-plated gold hardware to complement the richness of the colour and introduce a subtle hint of warmth and elegance.
To add even more depth, we lined the back of the hutch with a muted chinoiserie wallpaper. This soft, layered pattern brings in texture and visual interest without overwhelming the space, offering a perfect complement to the painted finish and creating a refined backdrop for displaying collected treasures.

A Curated Display
Then comes the moment when your vision finally comes to life. You place the last book, the final photograph, the last treasured souvenir, and step back to take it all in. Suddenly, all of your memories and favourite pieces come together, creating something that feels like a carefully curated museum of moments from your life.

It’s so special to see an ordinary part of your everyday home transform into one of your favourite spaces. What was once just a built-in becomes a place filled with stories, personality, and the pieces that make a house feel uniquely yours.

Layering and pulling colour from the pieces in this collection is what made French Eggshell the perfect choice. The colour highlights the textures, patterns, and unique details within the things we’ve gathered over time. This allows us to appreciate them in a whole new way.

We believe this is where personal style truly begins to evolve. It’s not from following trends, but from bringing together the things you love most and discovering the connection. Here, we’ve layered photographs, vintage finds, books, and collected treasures. We tied everything together with a beautiful colour that allows each piece to shine while creating a story that feels unique.
At the end of the day, this project was about creating a home for the things that tell a story. The treasured pieces we gather throughout our lives deserve more than storage. They deserve to be seen, enjoyed, and celebrated every day. All it takes ia a little vision, thoughtful layering, and the right colour. For us, French Eggshell and Fusion Mineral Paint created the perfect backdrop for letting these treasured pieces shine.

Now we’d love to see how you’ve displayed your own collections! Have you used Fusion Mineral Paint to create a special place for your favourite treasures? Share your projects, your collections, and the meaningful spaces you’ve created. We love seeing the stories you bring to life in your homes!
