For those who love aged, timeworn pieces, a collected home comes together through thoughtful layers of colour, texture, and meaningful objects. This milk paint furniture makeover was inspired by that very idea—bringing together favourite art and collected pieces to guide the transformation of a dresser using Homestead House’s Gaspé Milk Paint, resulting in a cohesive, layered look full of depth and character.

Before the transformation, the piece featured an intricately detailed mirror, ultimately set aside to be repurposed for a future project. While the ornate craftsmanship immediately caught the eye, the dresser itself required significant attention to restore its presence and potential.

Prep for a Milk Paint Furniture Makeover

Before starting prep, we removed all the hardware and thoroughly vacuumed every bit of loose debris. On a piece with ornate detailing like this, getting the vacuum into every nook and cranny is essential before moving on to the next step.

The next step is to remove any oils or residue. Older pieces like this have often been maintained with polishes, oils, or waxes, so it’s important to strip the surface completely to reveal a clean, bare base.

TIP: If you suspect wax on your furniture, use an odorless solvent to break it down and remove it effectively.

For this project, we applied our Fusion TSP Solution in a spray bottle to gently cleanse the surface. 

Once the piece was cleaned, we moved on to paint prep. We opted for a two-tone look with a stained top, so we used an orbital sander to strip the old finish and create a fresh surface for staining. The base, however, was left untouched, not even a scuff sand, so we could achieve a naturally distressed, and chippy look.

Paint & Finish

With prep complete, the piece was ready for paint. We mixed the milk paint using a 1:1 ratio of paint to water, whisking with a mini whisk to fully incorporate the pigments and break up any clumps. Once mixed, we let the paint sit for 10–15 minutes, allowing it to thicken slightly and ensuring the pigments were fully dissolved before application.

We applied a thin coat of Gaspé Milk Paint using our Staalmeester flat brush. Richly pigmented colors like this tend to offer excellent coverage right from the first coat. The true colour result of milk paint reveals itself after the second application.

TIP: To better control chipping and distressing, add a bonding agent to your paint mixture. This helps the paint adhere more securely to the surface.

The first coat on this piece looked exceptional, with very little transparency showing through. The second coat helped even out a few thinner areas while also encouraging subtle crackling and chipping, adding to the character of the finish.

To encourage the chipping effect, we used an electric sander with sanding pads over the raised, ornate edges. We also sanded the flat surfaces to smooth them out and remove any remaining pigment or raised wood fibres. This type of distressing is typical with milk paint finishes, as it enhances the authentic, time-worn appearance.

For the final touch, we applied Stain and Finishing Oil in Cappuccino to the top and the exposed wood areas. This created a rich, contrasting look that blends the old with the new.

To protect our milk paint finish, we applied Ultra Guard in Satin by Fusion Mineral Paint. It provides a durable protective layer for a distressed surface while leaving behind a beautiful satin sheen.
