Some furniture pieces get all the attention right away, while others are walked past a few times in a thrift store before their potential becomes obvious. This thrift store end table makeover is a perfect example of how a forgotten solid wood piece can be transformed into a timeless, neutral accent using Fusion Mineral Paint Algonquin with simple prep, paint, and finishing techniques. With its subtle apothecary-style details and well-worn finish, this small end table had great bones and was ready for a thoughtful refresh that would bring out its quiet character.
For this project, we knew that we had to use a classic go-to colour. Enter Algonquin, a warm, earthy, sandy taupe that has quickly become a favourite for good reason. It’s versatile, timeless, and full of depth. In this post, we’re sharing how an often-passed-over thrift store find was transformed into a piece that feels grounded, refined, and ready for a new home.

Prep a Thrift Store End Table Makeover
It was clear that this piece required a thorough cleaning. The layer of dust on the surface indicated it had been sitting on the back of the project shelf for quite some time. A simple spray-bottle mixture of our Fusion TSP Alternative and water proved to be an effective solution, removing surface dirt and debris while also dissolving any built-up oils or residues

After the deep cleaning, we decided to brighten the piece. Using an orbital sander, we completely removed the dark stain from the top, revealing beautiful cherry wood beneath. We then used a scuff sander on the base to create enough texture for the paint to properly adhere.

Paint and Wash
Next, we used painter’s tape to mask off the top from the base, preventing any accidents from transferring onto the freshly sanded surface. We ended up applying three coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in the colour Algonquin to achieve full coverage.
When transitioning from a dark colour to a lighter one, additional coats of paint may be needed.
Tip: Fusion also offers Transition, which can be used as a transition coat to eliminate the need for extra layers of paint. It acts as a high-coverage primer, helping reduce the amount of paint required for full opacity.

While the final coat of paint was drying, we prepared a whitewash for the top using a tester size of Limestone. We mixed the wash in a 3:1 ratio, keeping it slightly thinner so we could gradually build coverage. After about three coats of the whitewash, we achieved the perfect silky, sheer finish. You can still see the natural wood grain to show through.
Once both the paint and wash were fully dry, we applied Fusion Mineral Paint Ultra Guard in Satin Sheen. This adds protection and achieves a beautiful, buttery finish.

Thrift Store End Table Makeover Refreshed in neutrals
With the final protective coat cured, this once-forgotten piece was completely transformed. The soft, neutral base paired with the lightened wood top creates a timeless look that feels both fresh and classic.

Algonquin is a beautiful, versatile shade that instantly brightens furniture without feeling stark or cold. Its warm, soft tone adds lightness while still maintaining depth. This makes it an ideal choice for refreshing darker or dated pieces. Algonquin can be paired with natural wood, vintage hardware, or modern accents to create a clean, inviting, timeless look.

We paired this colour with bronze cup pulls, as the piece feels like it’s full of vintage character with a slightly masculine edge. The rich metal finish adds contrast and depth, making it the perfect choice for a side table in a library or any space that calls for a timeless, refined look.

This transformation is a perfect reminder that with a little patience, the right products, and thoughtful finishing touches, even the dustiest shelf-sitters can become beautiful, functional statement pieces once again.
We love how Algonquin continues to prove itself as a go-to colour for brightening furniture. Yet it still feels elegant and timeless. If you’ve used Algonquin in your own projects, we’d love to see how you’ve incorporated it into your space. And if you’re transforming smaller furniture pieces that make a big statement, don’t keep them to yourself! Share your before-and-afters with us!
