Materials Needed to Transform Your Fireplace
- Milk Paint (330g bag) in Coal Black
- Chippy brush (from your local hardware or dollar store)
- Mixing container
- Whisk
- Water
- Vacuum or dust cloth
Step-by-Step Guide to Transform Your Fireplace with Milk Paint
1. Minimal Prep Work
One of the best parts of this project is the minimal prep! Simply vacuum away any cobwebs or dust from the brick before you start. No need for heavy-duty cleaning or priming.
2. Mix Your Milk Paint
Milk Paint is a breeze to prepare. Use equal parts Milk Paint powder and water. Pro tip: Add the powder to the water (not the other way around) to prevent clumps from sticking to the bottom of your container. Stir until the consistency resembles table cream.
Not sure about solid coverage or a wash effect? Start with a thinner mixture (more water than paint), test a small area, and adjust as needed. We opted for solid coverage, so we added more powder to our mixture.
3. Apply with a Brush
Brick is a rough surface, so we recommend using a cheap chippy brush to avoid damaging your good brushes. Apply the paint directly onto the brick, working the bristles into the crevices for even coverage. Remember to stir your paint mixture regularly to keep the pigments evenly distributed.
4. Watch the Magic Happen
Milk Paint dries quickly—within about 30 minutes. It self-levels beautifully, leaving a smooth, matte finish. No topcoat is needed for brick, as the paint is naturally durable and allows the surface to breathe.
5. Enjoy the Results
In less than a day, your red brick fireplace will transform into a stunning modern centerpiece with a cozy, rustic vibe. Best of all, this entire project required just one 330g bag of Milk Paint!
Why No Topcoat?
Milk Paint is perfect for fireplaces because it doesn’t need a topcoat. Sealing it would alter its matte, chalky finish and intensify the colour, which isn’t ideal for achieving that authentic limewash look. Plus, Milk Paint is naturally durable and breathable, making it perfect for porous surfaces like brick.
Are you ready to transform your fireplace with authentic milk paint?
This simple fireplace makeover using Milk Paint proves that a little effort can go a long way in transforming your space. Whether you’re drawn to solid coverage or a more transparent wash, Milk Paint gives you the flexibility to create a look that’s uniquely yours.
