Step-by-Step Transformation Process with Fusion Mineral Paint Taupe Stain and Finishing Oil
Step 1: Clean with TSP Alternative
The first step in any project is ensuring the piece is thoroughly cleaned. We used Fusion’s TSP Alternative to remove any dirt, grease, or grime from the cedar chest. This ensures you do not push dirt, grease or grime into the wood when sanding.
Step 2: Removing the Old Finish
We sprayed Stripwell QSC Finish Remover on the top of the chest, making sure it was completely saturated.
After letting it sit for 15 minutes, we began scraping off the old finish. This process was repeated twice to ensure all the old finish was removed. Steel wool and a small metal brush helped get into the detailed edges.
Step 3: Neutralizing the Surface
Next, we sprayed Stripwell QSC Surface Cleaner to neutralize any remaining finish remover on the top of the chest.
Step 4: Sanding for SFO
We sanded the top of the chest evenly and consistently with an orbital sander using 120 grit sandpaper. Due to the heat (over 30 degrees), some resin started to pop up, so we moved the piece indoors to continue sanding.
We sanded the body of the chest too, trying to remove deep scratches. Paint won’t cover those so we sanded them smooth.
Step 5: Painting with Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Bellwood
We painted the bottom of the chest with Fusion™ Mineral Paint in Bellwood using a Staalmeester One Series Flat Brush.
This brush worked perfectly for both detailed and larger areas. Only two thin coats were needed for full coverage.
Step 6: Staining with Taupe SFO
To protect the freshly painted bottom from any drips, we covered it with a blanket. Using an economy brush, we applied the Taupe SFO to the top of the chest.
We let it sit for 15 minutes before wiping back the excess with an applicator sponge. After letting it sit overnight, we added a second coat, let it sit for 10 minutes, and wiped back the excess again. Adding additional coats of SFO will increase the sheen and the protection.
The Finished Look with Fusion Mineral Paint Taupe Stain and Finishing Oil
The transformation was incredible! The Taupe SFO gave the chest a light, airy look that perfectly matched the rest of the home’s decor. This once dark and outdated piece now fits beautifully into a modern setting. A simple furniture flip that anyone can do!
Tips for Your Own Fusion Furniture Makeover with Fusion Mineral Paint Taupe Stain and Finishing Oil
- Prep Thoroughly: Ensure your piece is clean and the old finish is completely removed for the best results when working with SFO.
- Work in Ideal Conditions: Avoid working in extreme temperatures to prevent issues. Weather can affect dry times. Try to avoid painting on extremely humid days or days with extreme temperature changes. Do not paint below 10ºC / 50ºF. Do not paint above 30ºC / 86ºF.
- Choose the Right Tools: Using the appropriate brushes and tools can make the process smoother and more efficient.
- Experiment with Coats: Depending on your wood, you might need multiple coats of stain to achieve your desired pigmentation. Hardwoods will accept less stain, softwoods will accept more.
