Whimsical Words from Fleur Harris
“When we moved into our new home (A 1908 Edwardian fixer-upper) in February there was not one wardrobe. The proper joinery isn’t to be installed until the renovation of the house is complete, which is a little while away. I’d stored our clothes in makeshift wardrobes made from stacks of boxes, which was fine as a temporary solution but not suitable longer term. I found an antique wardrobe online for $260 AUD and bought it, but unfortunately, between when I bought her and when I picked her up, the top timber detailing had been snapped off. So, I took the wardrobe into my shed and started tinkering away, and repaired it in my spare time over a month. I repaired it just enough so sit can stand proud, but not too much as I like the little dings and scuffs that time has decorated her with.
Deciding to Paint It Beautiful
Rejoining the top section created lots of repair marks. I decided a coat of paint was the best way to disguise these. I’d read a sumptuous chapter on colour in ‘French House Chic’ by Jane Webster so I was on the hunt for the perfect French grey. I found ‘Mid-Tone Warm Grey’ (a custom blend found in Fusion’s fan deck) by Fusion Mineral Paint
While discovering their paints I also came across their Ageing Wax, which I used to give this giant beauty her lovely old patina.
Check out the before and after ageing wax:
I love projects like this. Putting time and love into things to make them shine for the next chapter of their lives. I’m not sure what I’ll do with her when the proper joinery arrives. I think she’ll move into my studio and become a beautiful home for my hundreds of paint tubes!
For now I’m just glad to be able to put my clothes away!” -Fleur Harris
