Setting the Tone with Bellwood
The bottom floor of our townhouse presented an ideal canvas for a multi-purpose space. Designed to accommodate relaxation, reading, socializing, and creative activities for all ages, the plain walls and hardwood floors required just the right touch to elevate the room’s ambience. Let’s dive into the transformation.
The existing plain blue walls and hardwood floors provided a solid foundation, but I craved a colour change that harmonized with my relaxed, natural style. Fusion’s Bellwood, a soft sage green, emerged as the perfect choice. Its warmth and sophistication set the tone, creating a soothing atmosphere that complements both classical and modern settings. Covering the basement walls with three pints of Bellwood, at under $75, provided excellent coverage and brought my vision to life.
Versatility in Furnishings for an All-Purpose Room
Furnishing the space required careful consideration of versatility and aesthetics. A modular couch in a warm sand shade offered flexibility for reshaping based on varying needs – from group gatherings to cozy family nights and even accommodating overnight guests. The white oak table, connecting seamlessly with others chosen throughout the townhouse, added a touch of elegance to the room. Grounding the sitting area, an area rug with a geometric pattern in black, white, and tan tied together various room elements while introducing texture.
Versatility took centre stage with a modular couch in a warm sand shade, offering dynamic seating arrangements for family and guests. Complemented by a stylish white oak table, this functional setup accommodates changing purposes effortlessly. An intricately patterned area rug not only grounds the sitting area but also weaves together the room’s colour scheme.
Creating Space and Light with Mirrors
Strategically placing three repurposed mirrors at the end of the room brought depth and brightness to the basement. Mirrors, with their ability to create a sense of spaciousness and reflect light, played a crucial role in enhancing the basement’s aesthetics. The black window frame details on the mirrors added an extra layer of interest.
A trio of repurposed mirrors strategically placed at the room’s end served a dual purpose. Mirrors not only contribute to the illusion of a larger space but also reflect light, a crucial aspect in a basement setting. The black window frame details on the mirrors introduced another captivating layer to the overall design.
Crafting a Quiet Corner for Work and Play
Finding the perfect desk for a quiet corner away from the sitting area was pivotal. This dedicated space serves as a work or play area, a craft centre, or simply a quiet spot for contemplation. Tailoring the room design to accommodate personal lifestyle requirements ensured a harmonious blend of solitude and shared experiences.

A special Mention!
A special thank you goes out to Laurie, whose expertise and keen eye for design played a pivotal role in this townhouse makeover. Laurie’s journey, has taken her from Canada to Paris, to Andorra and back to her native land in 2014. With a newfound passion for European furnishings and design, Laurie, along with Pere her husband, opened Heirloom 142 in Creemore, Ontario, in 2014. Heirloom 142 features carefully curated vintage décor from Europe and Canada. In 2017, Lagom 142 joined the family, offering a Scandinavian-inspired selection of home decor and lifestyle goods, all handpicked with precision by Laurie and Pere. Their commitment to finding the perfect balance, encapsulated by the Swedish term “lagom,” has left an indelible mark on the townhouse’s aesthetic. I’d like to extend our heartfelt appreciation to Laurie for her invaluable contribution to the charm and elegance of this project.
